Letter to rising 8th and 9th graders (or new members) from Mrs. Wilson-Fields!
Dear Parents,
As an 8th or 9th grade band student your child finally has the opportunity to do what so many successful students have done before them, be part of the Band of Silver at West Hall High School!
We know that for some of you, this will be your first exposure to high school marching band and I wanted to take a brief minute to share some information with you.
Being in marching band (and band in general) is more than just playing an instrument. It is immersing your child in a culture of successful students and teachers who care about education. It challenges each child to use the creative side of his brain while, at the same time, learning a foreign language…MUSIC. There is also current data that clearly states that students involved in music academically outperform their non-musical counterparts. It also shows that music students are less likely to engage in risky behaviors.
Will you be a part of the West Hall High School Band family? Your child might not be a musical prodigy, but they will learn, laugh, and grow along the way. You will be amazed at what they can accomplish in four years of high school with music as a part of their journey!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Katy Wilson-Fields

Letter to new band parents from a former band parent!
Dear New Band Families,
I was privileged to be a West Hall High School Band Mom for six years (2012-18), and I’ve enjoyed the experience in so many ways. My two band kids, Charlie and Hannah, participated in the program for their entire high school careers, and it made a huge contribution to who they are today. Here are just a few of the things band participation gave them: lifelong friendships, hours and hours spent with students who care about their education and their craft, daily and weekly structured activity, expanded creativity, leadership opportunities, teamwork, collaboration, and the unique opportunity to create art and entertainment with a team.
Band is unlike most other organized school programs. Marching band students in particular are a rare combination of creative artist and trained athlete. From August through November, as they practice several hours per week indoors and out, perfecting music and marching drills, they exercise their bodies, minds, and creativity. Because of band participation, Charlie and Hannah are physically fit, responsible, disciplined, goal-oriented, accomplished students and musicians. It was such a positive experience for them that they’ve maintained their deep passion for music after graduation.
Charlie and Hannah would not be who they are without band. Both have gone on to higher education, and they continue to play. Charlie is now an accomplished trombonist who will probably make music a career. He's currently pursuing a music education major at UNG. Hannah has different career goals, but she is a devoted and talented clarinetist who participated in honor bands all through high school. She is now a member of the highly-competitive UGA Redcoat Marching Band.
I wholeheartedly recommend the band program at West Hall High School, along with their devoted and inspiring director, Mrs. Katy Wilson-Fields. It has been both an anchor and a launching point for my children. Any student - even those who don't initially consider themselves musicians - can benefit from the community, discipline, and passion that participation in band offers.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Wetzel
